Poetry Salon with Claire Keyes Featuring the Work of Aria Aber

December 11 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Poetry Packets are available near the library’s Main Desk, or you can download the Word Document here: Aria Aber Poems.

On Saturday, December 11th, the Poetry Salon at the Abbot Public Library will continue its study of Asian-American poets by focusing on Aria Aber. Aber was raised in Germany, where she was born to Afghan refugees, and is based in Oakland, California. She is currently a Stegner Fellow in Poetry at Stanford University. Her first full-length collection, Hard Damage, was published in September 2019. Poet Catherine Barnett writes, “with disarming ease, Hard Damage leaps from the personal to the political, from song to theory, from Rilke to ‘Afghan Blow,’ from a German childhood back to an earlier Afghani family history, ending up in a richly vexed American life.”

Aber herself writes that “English is not my first language, and many of those who write in English today share this fate: we are to English a foreigner; it is the colonizer’s garden through which we wade and where we meet.” She continues: “It’s true that poetry finds us when we least expect it, and perhaps when we need its lyric shrine the most. Poetry is everywhere; ideally, you are perceptive enough to be able to be charmed by its omnipresence.”

Join Marblehead Poet Claire Keyes at the Abbot Public Library from 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm on December 11th for a discussion of Aria Aber’s poems, or you may choose to join via Zoom. To attend via Zoom, please register in advance for this meeting here. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.
