Mock Newbery Event

January 12 @ 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm

Registration Recommended – call the Children’s Room at (781) 631-1481, Ext. 217 or 237

On Wednesday, January 12th, we will invite the Village School Library book club and APL’s Reviewer’s Book Club to vote on their choices for our Mock Newbery award at our event. The Newbery Medal is awarded annually by the American Library Association for the most distinguished American children’s book published the previous year. We are honoring this award by holding our own “Mock Newbery,” an event that has students who have been meeting in book groups choosing a winning book they believe deserves the award. The winning book chosen at this event will be included on the list of the Massachusetts Book Award this year.

Our sixth grade Children’s Party Planner Volunteer Group will coordinate décor, voting recording, and refreshments, and help distribute Newbery merchandise for participants in the voting. Registration is recommended – please call the Children’s Room at (781) 631-1481, Ext. 217 or 237.

About the John Newbery Medal

The Newbery Medal is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children.

The Newbery Award became the first children’s book award in the world. Its terms, as well as its long history, continue to make it the best known and most discussed children’s book award in this country.

From the beginning of the awarding of the Newbery and Caldecott Medals, committees could, and usually did, cite other books as worthy of attention. Such books are now referred to as Newbery or Caldecott Honor Books.
