Eelgrass has been declining for decades in Salem Harbor, and Salem Sound Coastwatch has been researching different hypotheses that could be causing this decline. Salem Sound Coastwatch, with funding from a MassBays Healthy Estuaries grant, worked with the Division of Marine Fisheries to investigate the relationship of available light and presence of eelgrass under and adjacent to floats. Learn how floats along our shoreline impact the amount of light that eelgrass, a flowering plant, receives. Emily will share the project’s methods, resulting data, and implications for eelgrass management. Scientific studies like this one are needed to inform policy and best practices to protect this important resource.

Emily Flaherty is passionate about fostering the next generation of ocean enthusiasts as Salem Sound Coastwatch’s School to Sea Director. She has a BS in Ocean Studies from Maine Maritime Academy and first-hand ocean experience as a National Marine Fisheries Observer. She is an experienced science teacher, having taught at Kennebunk High School, Maine and at Boston’s Museum of Science Youth Programs. She is currently working on her MS in Science in a Changing World at UMass Boston. At SSCW, Emily connects teachers and young people to their local environment in different ways that center around exploring local habitats and engaging in stewardship projects. Field work is at the heart of the work and bringing that into the classroom is a welcome challenge!
