Continuing Conversations on Race: Calling Out vs. Calling In

November 15 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Abbot Public Library and the Marblehead Racial Justice Team are presenting “Continuing Conversations on Race” on Zoom on Monday, November 15th from 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm.

We had discussed one of the challenges of anti-racism and anti-oppression work, which is labeling people and behavior as “racist” and “anti-racist,” and the feelings of defensiveness those labels can sometimes cause. We looked at an approach that avoids labeling a person as racist. This month, we will explore an additional approach to reducing defensiveness, Calling Out vs Calling In.

Calling Out is when we need to let someone know that their words or actions are unacceptable and will not be tolerated. Calling In is when there is an opportunity to explore deeper, make meaning together, and find a mutual sense of understanding across differences. Calling In is a reframing of Calling Out, with Calling Out being understood as less relational and more about “justice-seeking at all costs,” whereas Calling In can look similar in terms of practice, but the idea and the intent is to be in relationship, and to hold people accountable with love, with the hope of opening the door for change.

These ongoing conversations are a safe and welcoming place in which we explore our own privilege and biases, our questions, and where we continue to learn and grow by hearing each other’s stories so that we can best make a difference. It is a place for listening, conversation, and engagement. Please join us for an invigorating conversation!
