Continuing Conversations on Race: The Color of Law
September 20 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
Abbot Public Library and the Marblehead Racial Justice Team are presenting “Continuing Conversations on Race” on Zoom on Monday, September 20th at 7:00 pm.
Access the Zoom event at 7:00 pm on Monday, June 21st by visiting this link or by dialing +1-929-205-6099 from the New York Time Zone (if you’re in a different time zone, find out what number to call here) and entering the following Meeting ID: 463 613 7679.
Join us as we watch the video “Segregated By Design” that examines the forgotten history of how our federal, state, and local governments unconstitutionally segregated every major metropolitan area in America through law and policy.
The video is based on The Color of Law: A Forgotten History of How Our Government Segregated America by Richard Rothstein, which is available in ebook format on Overdrive, in e-audiobook format on Overdrive or hoopla, or you can reserve a print copy on your library account.
“Rothstein persuasively debunks many contemporary myths about racial discrimination… Only when Americans learn a common―and accurate―history of our nation’s racial divisions, he contends, will we then be able to consider steps to fulfill our legal and moral obligations. For the rest of us, still trying to work past 40 years of misinformation, there might not be a better place to start than Rothstein’s book.”― Rachel M. Cohen, Slate
After viewing “Segregated By Design” we will discuss the impact of the laws and policies on the history of Marblehead, even to today.
